Fabric Softener Is the No.1 Cause of Indoor Air Pollution. Make Your Own with this DIY Recipe

Pollution, both indoors and outdoors, is becoming a global concern. You may not feel that the air inside your home is polluted, but a test will tell you otherwise. Various chemicals and toxins are released in the air in our homes every day, and fabric softeners are among the likeliest culprits.

As you surely know, fabric softeners and other household products are full of chemicals. Like, really, really full. Studies have found carcinogenic and harmful chemicals in even the most expensive brands. So, apart from the fact that some of these products don’t even do their “jobs” as they should, they are also very dangerous for your health.

The good news is that most household products are easily replaceable with DIY products. Below we’ll show you how to make your own fabric softener that keeps things healthy and neat.

The Power of White Vinegar

You probably have a bottle of white vinegar at home – we constantly use it in our kitchen. What many of you don’t know is that it also has great cleaning properties. The liquid isn’t as strong as ACV, but when mixed with the right ingredients, it creates a powerful fabric softener.

Why Should I Use White Vinegar In My Laundry?

Good question. The biggest advantage is that it’s not toxic at all unlike the products you buy. It works just as good if not better, but without the whole toxic chemical package within. It will soften and brighten your clothes and is great for the environment as well. You can’t say this about any household products you buy in the market.

Don’t think it won’t do a great job. As a matter of fact, the DIY fabric softener below will keep your clothes soft and white while maintaining the dark tones of your blacks. The acetic acid from white vinegar is powerful enough to eliminate stains without harming the fabric of your clothes.

Here’s how to prepare the homemade softener:

  • A gallon of white vinegar
  • 30 drops of any essential oil
  • 2 cups baking soda

Just whip everything together and pour into a clean bottle. Dilute ¼ cup of this softener with ¾ cups of water prior to using it. Add it to your washing machine during the final rinse cycle and voila! You will be surprised to see that your clothes are softer and whiter, not to mention they now smell great.
