Black Stars: I know his qualities
Head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars, Charles Kwabla Akonnor has admitted that he is aware of the qualities Mohammed Salisu possesses despite excluding him from his squad.
The 47-year-old trainer has named his 30 man squad for the friendly games against Ivory Coast and Morocco scheduled for next month with the former Real Valladolid centre back.
Despite his early struggles in the Premier League, Salisu has made nine appearances for Southampton.
Salisu in an interview last month recused himself from national duty stating that he wants to focus on his club and represent the Black Stars when the time is right.
Akonnor when asked about the availability of the defender for the international friendly games, the former Kotoko head coach said there are equally good players in his position, thus his services will not be needed.
“He is somebody who I have watched for some time now. We understand he is doing well but in his area of the position we have a lot of players that we are satisfied with”, Akonnor said at the press conference.
“We don’t have much of a problem in his position so we would look at him when he is ready”, he added.
Salisu has already turned down an invitation to play for the Black Stars last year during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
He joined the Premier League side last summer from Valladolid.
The 21-year-old played his full debut for the club against Chelsea in February this year.
