Do Not Confirm Lauretta Onochie As INEC Commissioner

The Nigerian Senate has been warned not to confirm President Muhammadu Buhari’s aide, Lauretta Onochie as a National Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, gave the warning, describing her as a person widely known to be deeply divisive and a strong member of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC.

Onochie is also seen by the group as one of the die-hard partisan loyalists of the Buhari government.

HURIWA warned that any attempt to confirm the Delta-born presidential aide as INEC commissioner would be the death nail to the coffin of the independence and impartiality of INEC.

The group said the confirmation of Onochie would unambiguously become the everlasting evidence that the National Assembly has become a rubber-stamped institution and open to corruption and compromises.

“We believe that Onochie, who openly confessed her membership to the All Progressives Congress and has posted a lot of statements on the popular social media platforms to demonstrate her aversion for multiparty democracy but prefers a one-party state, is not a fit and proper person to be so appointed into INEC.

“Her enlistment into INEC means that the 2023 election has been rigged already in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress. Her going to INEC means the official obituary and death of INEC”.

HURIWA asked the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan and other lawmakers to maintain the already established precedent by rejecting Onochie’s nomination.

PDP Comes After Abba Kyari Over Allegations He Collected Bribe from Hushpuppi

PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party has reacted to allegations by the United States that senior police officer, Abba Kyari collected bribe from notorious frausdster, Abbass Ramon aka Hushpuppi.

Reacting on Thursday, PDP called for a forensic investigation into the allegations.

Recall that the United States of America Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, had linked head of IGP Intelligence Response Team, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, to alleged international fraudster, Abbas Ramon, popularly known as Hushpuppi.

The PDP in a statement issued by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, noted that the revelation of the involvement of Kyari, “the head of Nigeria’s intelligence response unit, as a receiver of proceeds of international fraud is worrisome, disturbing and a stain on the integrity of our nation.”

The statement reads: “The PDP asks President Buhari to direct the Inspector General of Police to take in Abba Kyari for questioning and if found culpable, should be handed over to the FBI.”

“It is indeed disquieting that the integrity of our nation has fallen so abysmally low under the corrupt and fraud-patronizing President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress, APC, administration, to the extent that the head of its police intelligence unit is being charged in connection with international fraud.

“Our party demands that the APC administration should not sweep this matter under the carpet given the manifest rapport between Kyari and some top APC leaders.

“We urge President Buhari not to ‘ease out’ this case of corruption but should immediately restore the integrity and image of our nation by allowing for a forensic investigation on the suspect.

“Moreover, if this Abba Kyari matter is not well handled, it will be a permanent stain on the reputation of our police, security system and our nation at large.”

Buratai Asked for Igboho to be Handed Over to Him But Was Told Benin Republic Follow Rule of Law

Human Rights lawyer, Femi Falana has revealed that Tukur Buratai had asked Yoruba agitator, Sunday Igboho to be handed over to him.

Recall that Buratai is Nigeria’s ambassador to Benin Republic.

However, his request was turned down as Benin Republic insisted that the country follows rule of law.

In an interview on Channels Television on Thursday July 29, Falana claimed that Buratai made the request when he had not submitted his letter of credence to Benin Republic’s President. He also said that he learnt there were attempts to throw Igboho in a waiting plane for return to Nigeria.

Falana said;

“In the case of Sunday Igboho, again despite my disagreement with him, I came out to say you cannot just throw him into a waiting plane as we were told, it was attempted.

“You have to go to court. You have to make a request under international law, under the ECOWAS convention on extradition.

“The government of Nigeria is requested to submit an extradition request to the government of Benin Republic and so when the plenipotentiary, General Yusuf Buratai (retired), who at that time had not submitted his letters of credence asked that Igboho be handed over to him.

“He was told, ‘sorry, we operate the rule of law here’. That is why that matter is still in court.”

Noting that he is opposed to the campaign of the balkanisation of Nigeria, Falana however added that the law guarantees the rights of self-determination.

Speaking further, the senior lawyer explained that amid the agitations in some quarters that the nation should split, the Federal Government owes it a duty to convince the agitators by reposing confidence on the corporate existence of Nigeria.

Stressing that it is not a criminal offence for some persons to make separatists demands, Falana said the current administration should respect human rights in line with Article 20 of the African Charter on Human Rights.

He said;

“Personally, I am strenuously opposed to the campaign for the balkanisation of Nigeria because I believe the masses of our people are oppressed by the ruling class and imperialism.

“To that extent, I have a fundamental ideological disagreement with those who are calling for the breakup of the country along ethnic lines.

“If a group of people decides to fight for the breakup of the country, the duty of the government is to try as much as possible to convince them to repose confidence in the corporate existence of Nigeria.”

It declared him the lawful candidate of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP) in the December 5, 2020 By-election for the seat.
