Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has confirmed that the police officer who allegedly caused the death of a footballer signed to Remo Stars FC has been arrested.
Mr Abiodun said in a tweet on Monday that the policeman was arrested following his order.
“As at this morning, I can confirm that the perpetrator has since been arrested, as directed by me,” he said.
The governor assured that the matter would not be treated ‘lightly’, adding that his administration’s priority was “to ensure a safe and secure society.”
The policeman, whose identity has not been revealed, is said to be a member of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), which has come under criticism over its operations.
Tiamiyu Kazeem was allegedly pushed from a police van to an oncoming vehicle on Saturday. He died moments later.
The defender was said to have had a scuffle with the police along Sagamu over his identity after being allegedly branded an internet fraudster.
There have been protests in Sagamu since the incident occurred.
