Anxiety can have a severe impact on the ability of people to function optimally at home, work, or school and in the light of the current COVID-19 crisis, the level of many people’s anxiety has gone up the roof.

People are not only worried about the COVID-19 infection itself, but many whose livelihoods have been affected are also worried about what the future holds for them.

In every case, worry and anxiety only worsen the impact of the current situation so learning to manage anxiety will be beneficial for the recovery process.

The following steps are useful in controlling anxiety.

  • Make a note of the things you are worried about. By doing this, you are trying to be as objective as you could be. When you make a note of the problems, you will be able to take steps in specifically solving the problem, rather than have general concerns.
  • Make a list of possible solutions to the problems. When you have identified specific problems, the next step is to write down the possible solutions to those problems and actively work on the solutions.
  • Connect. In times of immense stress, some people tend to isolate themselves. With the COVID-19 pandemic around, we are limited in the amount of physical contact we can have with other people, however, there is an opportunity to stay in touch with loved ones via texts, phone calls, or video calls. Social connection is a vital ingredient for stable mental health.
  • Avoid information overload. These days, there are so many sources of information out there, many spreading falsehood and conspiracies. It is difficult as an individual to keep up with all the information and in fact, it is unhealthy to try to do so. The best way to manage this problem is to only search for the information you need at a time and stick to only official sources.
  • Look after yourself. It is okay to look after yourself. Be conscious about doing all the things that will help to prevent you from getting sick, like good personal hygiene, a healthy diet, and exercise.
  • Practice relaxation techniques. Relaxation techniques are vital in managing anxiety and promoting stable mental health overall. These techniques include.
  • Meditation
  • Controlled breathing
  • Yoga
  • Seek medical attention. If you feel overwhelmed by anxiety or depression and are unable to cope or you experience thoughts of harming yourself, speak urgently to a medical practitioner. Your mental health is as important as your physical health, so where you are unable to manage on your own, you need to seek help.
