Reactions Trail Senator Shekarau’s Advice To Tinubu On National Assembly

 Ibrahim Shekarau

Ibrahim Shekarau, a former governor of Kano State, has stirred reactions with is recent statement.

His advice to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to scrap the National Assembly in the bid to reduce the cost of governance, has elicited sharp reactions from some citizens of Kwara State.

The Kano Central Senator had advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on steps to take in reducing the cost of governance in the country under the current dispensation.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Senator Shekarau claimed that the country does not need both chambers of the National Assembly under President Tinubu.

“Left to me, we don’t need to have the two chambers, the two houses,” he argued.

According to him, ” It is costing the country, I agree a democracy means getting as many involved as possible, but the way it is going on now, there are almost 500 legislators nationwide, I don’t think we really need this much at the moment.”

Reacting to Shekarau’s position, an elder statesman in Ilorin, Alhaji Lasisi A.K.Jimoh and a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, said “the National Assembly is created by the Constitution so, Tinubu cannot do away with it.

“However, all Nigerians know that the National Assembly is the most costly establishment in Nigeria today. Its members are also the most avaricious Nigerians who siphon a lot of our national fund into their own purses through padded budgets.

“It is also common knowledge that they bully Federal Government Agencies to submission and into connivance in the use of “Constituency Projects” as conduit pipes for nefarious ends. Certainly, there is an urgent need to curb them to save Nigeria.

“But that cannot be achieved unless Mr President, Asiwaju Tinubu, resists the temptation to indulge in RUB MY BACK, I RUB YOUR OWN partnership with them. That one go easy so?” he queried.

In his own reaction, the Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Ilorin, Professor Moyosore Ajao, said, “I absolutely agree with Senator Shekarau.

“We need to cut down the cost of governance in our country. I also believe that we need to make the National Assembly position part-time while only the principal officers are full-time. How many times in a week do they sit to legislate?”

Also reacting, a professor of Political Science, University of Ilorin, Hassan Saliu, said, based on the cost that the nation is bearing in maintaining the national assembly, it will be difficult to contest that position with Senator Shekarau.

He, however, argued that “on the strength of representative democracy, it will be difficult to sustain the argument, because of the intrinsic value of democracy, especially in the long run.

“My own position is that with the current structure, bringing about a reduction in the number of National Assembly members would be a difficult option, not with the attitude of the members who have the power to bring that about, ” he added.

Superstar Nigerian singer, Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid has opened up on why he prefers staying indoors and spending time with his kids.

He made this known in a recent interview where he opened up about his lifestyle and how he no longer finds joy in partying.

According to Wizkid, his preference has nothing to do with people’s views but his age and personal experience.

In his words:

“I’m an Introvert man, I stay indoors, I don’t like to do a lot, I don’t hang out. I used to love all that in the past, but, I am no longer interested in such.

“I think that staying indoors really comes from my age and my personal experiences, not how people perceived me. I’m getting older and getting smarter with my decisions.

“As you grow older you just know what you want more, I don’t want to be at the party, I don’t want to hang out. When I go to the party sometimes, I’m excited to be there, and then someone just spills a drink on me, I would be like, I could be at home with my son, just having a good time.

“Though I don’t feel insulted with such situations, the thought that I could just be home with my child having fun make such a situation a big deal.”

You Can’t Work At Cross Purposes Under Me, Tinubu Warns Service Chiefs

Bola Tinubu

Nigeria’s number one man, President Bola Tinubu has issued a warning to Service Chiefs.

He asked them to work together in order to strengthen the fight against insecurity.

Tinubu gave the warning at a meeting he had with heads of security agencies on Thursday.

Addressing State House correspondents after the meeting, the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, said the President demanded frequent consultations among the agencies.

The President also mandated the security agencies to develop a blue print to deal with the issue of crude oil theft, indicating that the changes to meet the requirements of the changing times.

Monguno said: “The President has revealed that in moving this country forward, he needs the security agencies to redouble their efforts. And he’s also pointed out that his own philosophy is one of contemporary security measures dealing with the requirements of the time.

“He has made it very clear that he will not accept a situation in which our fortunes keep declining. And his own trajectory is that national security has to be coordinated, there has to be wherever whatever it says whether it is a basket system, but there must be a clearing house.

“All agencies must work to achieve one single purpose. Working at cross purposes and colliding with each other is not something that he will condone. He has made it very, very clear that all the security agencies must comply with the demands of coordination, with the demands of frequent consultations and also timely reports which must be acted on.”

The NSA said the president told the security chiefs during the two hours meeting of his determination to build on gains made so far, reverse misfortunes and turn the tide in favour of the country.

He added that Tinubu said the country should not be on its knees struggling while other countries were walking and achieving greater heights.

He said: “Having been briefed by the participants of the meeting, Mr. President, addressed prevailing issues confronting the nation in terms of insecurity and also mentioned his own philosophy towards dealing with national security issues.

“First and foremost, he appreciated the armed forces and intelligence agencies and the wider paramilitary agencies for the work they have been doing in the past couple of years. Their sacrifice, their loyalty, and he also paid tribute to those who died in defending this country, from the great big menace of terrorism, insurgency, banditry, oil theft, sea robbery, piracy, etc, etc.

“He is going to embark on a lot of reforms in terms of our security architecture, he is going to take a closer look at our misfortunes in the maritime domain, focusing particularly on the issues of oil theft, that is not going to tolerate. Wherever the problem is coming from, it must be crushed as soon as possible.

“He is already mandated by the security agencies to come up with a blueprint as far as he knows as far as it’s concerned, it doesn’t have the luxury of time. And whatever changes will be made have to be done as soon as possible.

“The President also has decided that whatever ventures the armed forces are going to be engaged in, they must carry along those operatives in the theatre. They must be well fed, well kitted, motivated and given all that they require.

“President has said clearly that you will do whatever is within his powers to enable the operational elements but the intelligence agencies must also make their work easy for them by providing the type of intelligence that they require to carry out the assignment.”

Those in attendance at the President’s first engagement with heads of the nation’s security and intelligence agencies include the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Farouk Yahaya; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Amao; and the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba.
